10 Things You Should Know Before Going to a Tame Impala Concert

If you're heading to the Tame Impala Deadbeat Tour, a little preparation can make a huge difference. I've been to several Tame Impala concerts over the years, and I've seen everything from people fainting from dehydration to fans getting turned away because of venue bag policies. Most of these tips are especially helpful for general admission floor tickets, but plenty apply no matter where you're sitting.

Tame Impala concert essentials checklist featuring earplugs, electrolytes, sunscreen, compression socks, Sharpie, portable charger, rain poncho and candy

1. How Early Should You Line Up for a Tame Impala Concert?

If you want barricade and don’t have early entry GA, be prepared to queue all day. For some of the shows I’ve gone to, people have lined up as early as 8 a.m. Ladies, I strongly recommend not wearing heels. I wore boots once at a festival and my feet were tingly for days. Which leads me to my next point, if you’re going to be queueing all day…

2. Eat a Real Meal Before the Show

Eat a protein-heavy breakfast and lunch. Not just snacks, MEALS. You’ll need the energy to get through the day and you want your blood sugar to be stable. Anyone can have low blood sugar, not just diabetics. Signs of low blood sugar are: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, nausea, anxiety and fast heartbeat. Bring some candy with you like Smarties, SweeTarts or Skittles. These usually work the fastest.

3. Hydrate Before Concert Day, Not Just the Day Of

Stay extra hydrated all week, not just the day of the show. It’s also a good idea to add electrolyte packets to your water and bring some with you. If you drink too much water without electrolytes, it can actually throw off your electrolyte balance. Signs of a drop in electrolyte levels are: headaches, dizziness and fatigue. I’d recommend you stop drinking water an hour before doors so you don’t have the urge to go to the bathroom mid-set.

4. Don't Stand Still for Hours

Sit every chance you get: while waiting in line and if possible, before the opener. Standing for hours on end without moving can cause blood to pool in your legs which can lead to dizziness and possibly fainting. If you don’t have the option to sit, try not to lock your knees and do some calf raises to help the blood circulate back up to your heart and brain. Shifting your weight from one foot to another can also help.

5. Wear Compression Socks If You're in General Admission

Speaking of circulation, compression socks are your best friend if you’ll be standing for multiple hours at a time. Wearing compression socks can also help move back up towards your heart and brain and prevent dizziness.

6. Dress for the Weather (and Wear Comfortable Shoes)

If you’re traveling and are unfamiliar with the city you’re going to, check AccuWeather up to 15 days in advance for the forecast. If there’s rain in the forecast, bring a disposable poncho. For hot weather, bring sunscreen, a hat and cooling towels. For cold weather, bring some disposable hand warmers and dress in layers so you can remove your jacket once indoors. The jacket also doubles as storage so you don’t have to go to bag check. And once again, I cannot emphasize this enough…WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES.

7. Check the Venue's Bag Policy Before You Go

Check the venue’s bag policy for sizes, restricted items and other tips. Some venues don’t have a bag check and you may not have anywhere to store your bag if you took a rideshare.

8. Pack These Concert Essentials

Some helpful items to bring with you: earplugs, sharpie for autographs just in case (make sure it works!), gum, portable phone charger/power bank and candy for blood sugar.

9. Save Your Phone Battery for the Show

If you’re not bringing a phone charger, here are some tips to conserve your phone battery:
  • Put your phone in low power mode
  • Use your phone in dark mode
  • Turn down your brightness
  • Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth
  • Put your phone in airplane mode or turn it off if you’re not using it
  • Turn off “Hey Siri” (active listening drains your battery)

10. Be Responsible If You Choose to Take Psychedelics

Don’t overdo it and don’t try things for the first time the night of the show. I’ve heard of people that have been carried out by paramedics during the show or don’t remember a thing.
